This was first Estonian style shawl design. It was also my first design that more fun than practical.
This was a fun challenge to see if I could put stitch patterns together and come up with something that looked nice. I also enjoy math and the computations to make the edging just right hit that happy spot.
Since nupps are such an important element in the Estonian lace shawl, I wanted to make sure there were lots of them in this design. I think I might have gone a bit overboard though.

There are no nupps in the center section though, just for a little break. The center section is rather simple. It is an 8 row repeat, 4 of which are purl back rows. The remaining 4 rows are basically the same 2 rows but the second set of 2 is shifted over so that the pattern staggers before it stavks again.

As you can see I am making progress on it. For those who don’t know this pattern was first published in 2012 and is still available in my Ravelry shop. This is me redoing it. It will be tech edited and I’m hoping for testers too this time around and the new version will be released probably around this time next year.
If you would like to practice nupps before working them on your “actual” piece, here is a link to a tutorial video to get started and for tips and tricks. Mirror knitters click here.
This is defiantly not my last Estonian style lace piece there are others after it in small and large sizes. Go check them out for yourself.
Happy making!
