This is a traditional, authentic style Haapsalu shawl from Estonia. It wasn’t knitted in Estonia, but was designed and knitted to their standards based on info from the book “The Haapsalu Shawl”. There is a center, which is framed in garter stitch and then there is a border which is also framed in garter stitch. The Edging is worked in garter stitch on larger needles in two separate, but identical pieces and sewn onto the shawl. The Center is the “Lepatrinukiri” or ladybug stitch pattern.
I then made the border using a basic diamond with nupps and yarn overs. The Edging has a zigzag of nupps in it, along with a small diamond of nupps and yarn overs.
Traditionally, Haapsalu shawls are worked in white. You can choose any color you like to work your piece in. Just keep in mind that the lighter the color the better the nupps will stand out.
