Tech Editing

I love numbers and words and sharing that love with others who might not like those parts as much. As a designer myself, I understand the value and security of having another set of eyes on your design instructions before it heads out into the world. I’m here to support you, offer suggestions and let you know when something isn’t right in your pattern. Tech editing is the part of the design process that gives you confidence that your customers can be confident in their stitching because they know the have good, clear instructions in their hands.
Prices vary per pattern type as some take longer than others. I charge an hour minimum and then in 15 minute increments after that. Generally my rate is $35 per hour. Occasionally I will edit in trade of something you have to offer.
I will not tech edit anything that contains “mature” content.
I can edit pdf or Word files, Google Docs are fine too, and will return them to you annotated. If there is another way you’d like to work, I’m open to talk about it.To ask for an estimate please click here. After I receive your info I will look it over and send you the estimated time and cost. If you accept, I will then send you an agreement. See a sample agreement below.

If you have any questions please email sara@azariahsfibrearts.com

I keep office hours of Mon-Thurs 930am-5pm; Fri 11am-5pm all times are mountain, USA. This is not my tech editing time, that would way too much time in front of a screen. This is the time you can expect me to respond to tech editing emails and forms.

Tech Editing Testimonial
“I had a complicated pattern with many color changes, available in 9 sizes. Sara, of Azariah Fiber Arts, did a great job tech editing the pattern. She provided both grammar fixes and suggestions along with a full edit of the pattern details and numbers. I have worked with other tech editors but feel Sara did a better job overall. I really liked the way she presented her changes as they were easy to follow to make the corrections required. I will definitely be working with her again on my future patterns.” – Lisa Sharpe of ByTheOceanKnits

Chart Making – BOTH crochet and knit

Making charts is a favorite thing of mine to do. I am a very visual personal and this brings the crochet and knitting to life in a different way than stitching does.
For knitting I use a software that can take line by line written instructions and make a chart. It can also make line by line written from a chart. If what you have is a chart you drew out on a piece of paper that is fine too, I can work with that.
Need different row numbers because of repeats? Done.
Working in rounds instead of flat? Okay!
With many patterns being digital now, offering both charted and written instructions is becoming a very regular practice in both crafts.

Schematic Making

A schematic can be all it takes to make or break a stitching experience. A detailed but clear schematic that can make a stitching experience be good or even great is what I aim for. From unusual hats to shawls and sweaters to even socks, I can get your schematic lined up.
Any design that has multiple sizes, an unusual shape, or a lot of different parts will benefit from a schematic.

Ghostwriting

If you have finished a piece, written good notes and have some photos to share, but no time or want to write the pattern, let me do it for you!
I can ghostwrite your pattern, in your desired style, grade it (if needed) and have it tech edited so that it is ready for pattern testing or publication. I charge $40 per hour for this service and limit myself to one ghostwriting project at a time.

Pattern Testing and Support

As a tech editor, I feel that pattern testing is an important part of the design process. As a designer I know that this part of the process can be time consuming and disheartening. Finding testers can be tough and then finding reliable testers is even harder. If you don’t want to deal with the testing process yourself, let me run your test. I run all tests through Yarn Pond. It will be ran under your account so that you have full access to everything before, during and after the test.
While you have full access I am the one who sets it all up, chooses testers, sends out the pattern, fields questions and wraps it all up at the end, only bringing to you the info that you need to make changes to the pattern or see the stitcher’s point of view.
I charge flat rates based on the number of testers needed and the time frame of the test.

I also offer pattern support. It is wonderful when designers make themselves available for pattern support, answering stitcher’s pattern specific questions so that they can have a successful project. However, I realize that not all designers have the time to offer this. That’s where I can help. Let those questions come to me and I answer them for you. I’ll keep track not only of time, so I can charge accordingly, but also to see trends of what stitcher’s are asking about so that you, the designer, can then make changes, if needed, to current patterns or offer different kinds of tutorials in the future.
Anything that totally vexes me I will bring to you. I want your customers to be happy with your pattern and be excited for when the next one is coming out.
I charge by the hour, taking time and billing on a quarterly basis.

If you are unsure or have questions, email me and lets talk about it. sara@azariahsfibrearts.com
