There are many different kinds of people in the world all with various amounts of levels of planning and details. I teeter between two of these different types.
All planned out before the first stitch on the “final” project is made or let’s get started and see what’s going to happen.
These two extremes are an odd combination I realize, but each belongs to a different type of item I design. The former to lace knitting and the latter to knit or crochet accessories. The two come together for crocheted blanket designs.
For lace knitting I spend A LOT of time making swatches, doing math, reworking numbers and figuring out how to use as much of the yarn as possible. Then I figure out stitch patterns, chart them and decide exactly how to put them together.
For most of the accessories that I design, I fly more by the seat of my pants. Below you can see the early photos of the Color Drip Accessories Set; this was before I had yarn support…

I had enough yarn to make all the pieces, just not as a cohesive set. This set started with the mitts and grew from there.

There is still an element of design as you in the lace knitting. I am working on a piece right now that has 5 different charts for each row, some of which are used twice in each row, One of the charts I have reworked so many times that I have truly lost count.

What about you? Do you plan ahead when you make a project and make sure you have all the supplies before you get started? Do you like to start with the pattern, hook/needles and yarn at hand and will get what you need as needed? Drop you answer in the comments below!
The pattern for the baby booties is coming here on Saturday! It will be complete with video tutorial links!
