Spit and Splice and other Joints

There are many different ways to join a new ball of yarn or a new color, some are neater than others.

I published a tutorial yesterday of 3 of my favorite ways to join yarn together.

Here I will also include some pictures of a couple of those joins in action.

The Magic Join is great for plant fibers and projects that are using up scraps. You can use it on non super wash wool as well but it isn’t needed. This method is quick and easy to tie ends together and begin forming a ball for a piece where color change doesn’t matter. It is ideal for shawls, doilies and blankets.

This is a magic join where I left the tails longer and knit them in. If you look closely near the top center of the work you can see them hanging.

Spit and Splice is for those non super wash fibers. It will only work on the fibers that can felt. It requires no other tools, just a bit of spit and your hands. It won’t work on synthetics, plants or super wash fibers.

On this one I used spit and splice. The join is done so well I couldn’t even find it again, but it’s in this area somewhere.

The last join I demonstrate in the tutorial is the Russian Join. It is strong, but requires a tapestry needle to execute. I used this one in this color change project and it worked pretty well with some planning.

Happy making!
