From Idea to Publication

This is the first entry that I am sharing about this project, that will probably become 2 shawl patterns. As you can see by the date below these thoughts are about a month old. I will add more thoughts as new posts as things keep developing.

I recently had the itch to design another triangular lace shawl while I was working on this shawl.

My first thought was how to make this same shape and style but add on teeth as an edging along the way.

After some thinking through and looking at schematics I decided that the teeth would end up by the neck and that’s not the look I am going for.

The best way so far that I’ve thought of to get teeth where I want them is to make them first, like for an Orenburg shawl, pick up stitches and then decrease to the top.

So far I have the shawl shape, that the stitch repeat will be the width of the stitches picked up in each tooth and that I need a center double decrease and a decrease on each end.

One of my favorite things is to give stitchers the tools to make a piece using any yarn and needle combination they desire and get the finished size they want. This piece will have that element in it. There will be a math section broken down step by step.

There is some triangle math starting with a known wingspan to then figure out the length of teeth that will be needed to begin.

Of course there will also be swatching, all step by step.

As I was typing the intro paragraph and remembering why the teeth would be by the neck, I had another idea. In my mind it was easiest to put the teeth on the side of the shawl that doesn’t change shape. I don’t want to increase or decrease within the teeth to build this shape. What if however the teeth come AFTER the shaping section…

I wanted this shape because it is easier to stop increasing and start decreasing when half of the yarn is gone or you like the depth that has been reached, without having to do the math beforehand.

There shall be swatching!
