Brick and Mortar Hat and Mitts Spotlight

Crocheted mitts, knitted hat. Brown Sheep Company Nature Spun Fingering and Prairie Spun DK.

Other than having a great set of mini skeins that I wanted to use, I don’t remember how this set was born.
I love fall. The colors especially, Mom had given me a set of mini skeins that were fall colors and they were waiting for the “perfect” project. I never found one, so I designed one. The first 2 photos in the gallery below show how those mitts turned out in the reversible crochet version and squishy knit version. The same set of minis made both pairs.

I enjoyed the brick pattern so much I decided to make a hat to match. One of the dyers I used to buy from, they’re in Canada, had just released some yarn with fall vibes. I ordered some and made matching hats with the colors flipped in each craft.

Getting the crocheted version to be reversible was tricky but worth the effort. I started out with an elongated single crochet but the “V” in the back was too big and because of how the pattern works it would have been a big “V” every other row. I played, swatched, ripped, thought and tried again until I got something that I was happy with. I then shot a video to show how I modified the stitch.

In the time I had to work on the knitted version, I didn’t find a way to make it be reversible. I’ve thought about it in the time since and I just don’t think it would be possible in knitting with that stitch pattern. Mosaic it could be done and would still be squishy, but that’s a completely different kind of knitting.

I am very pleased with how each set turned out and yes I have favorites. I love the crocheted mitts and the knitted hat the most, that’s why that’s what’s in the photo at the top.

CROCHET MITTS PATTERN
“E” Hook
Fingering weight yarn in desired number of colors
Gauge: 21 sts and 30.5 rows to 4” / 10 cm in pattern In this pattern BOTH st and row gauge matter.
Use the gauge and your hand measurements to figure out how many foundation single crochets to begin with and how many rows to work.
Row 1 (RS): Using CC 1, make a FSC of the number of sts needed based on your calculations.
Rows 2 – 4: Turn, ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across. At the end of Row 4, change to MC with the last sc.
Row 5: Turn, ch 1, sc in the same st and in the next 4 sts, [MESC into the bottom of the sc 4 rows below, see video link in the box on page 2. Sc in the next 5 sc] across, changing to CC 2 with the last sc. Do NOT cut MC, carry it up the side of the work.
Rows 6-9: Turn, ch 1, sc in each st across. At the end of Row 9, change to MC with the last sc.
Row 10: Turn, ch 1, sc in the same st and in the next st, [MESC, sc in the next 5 sc] across to the last 3 sts, MESC, sc in the last 2 sts, changing to the next CC with the last sc.
Rows 11 – 14: Turn, ch 1, sc in the same st and in each st across. At the end of Row 14, change to MC with the last sc.
Row 15: Turn, ch 1, sc in the same st and in the next 4 sts, [MESC, sc in the next 5 sc] across, changing to the next CC with the last sc.
Rep Rows 6-15 for pattern until you have worked the desired number of rows based on your calculations. End with a Row 10 for the best look or 15 if needed. At the end of the last row, do NOT change colors. Finish off leaving a 4 yd / 4 m tail, for seaming and first edging.
Seaming
Fold the piece in half so that you are joining the first row to the last row, wrong sides together. Using a whip stitch and matching stitch for stitch, sew the side seam until you reach the desired thumb placement. Weave the sewing yarn through stitches on the wrong side. When you reach the place where you want to sew the stitches together again, go ahead. Count the stitches on both the first and last row to make sure you have skipped the correct amount of stitches. Continue sewing until you reach the opposite side. Do not cut the yarn, you will use it for the Edging.
Edging
Insert the hk into the end of the row that is nearest the sewing tail. YO and pull up a lp, ch 1, sc in the same place and in the end of each row around, join, finish off.
Insert hk into the end of the row that is nearest the seam on the opposite end, YO and pull up a lp, ch 1, sc in the same place and in the end of each row around, join, finish off.
Weave in ends, block if desired and enjoy!
