I have been a crocheter since 2002 when I finally conquered it. I have been chaining since I was 4 years old but could never understand what to do next. This is long before YouTube and having the internet readily available. I was blessed to have 3, yes 3, generations of crocheters within a block to help me; my grandmother, my mom and my sister, my younger sister. Still it just never took.
After about 6 months of being married and a homemaker I wanted a different craft to fill my time and I decide this was it, I AM GOING TO CROCHET! I sat down in the middle of the dining room floor, we never did have a table in that apartment, with the beginner’s book, yarn and hook. I’m not sure what time I started but I was still there when my husband came home from work. He wanted to help. I had my chain, of course, I handed him the book, showed him what to read and added to stop at every punctuation mark. I knew that from watching my mom teach others over the years.
Slowly he read, because he was basically reading in another language, and I did each little thing, tiny step by tiny step to make a double crochet and it worked!
Fast forward to the end of 2024 and I have never, never made a pair of crocheted socks, nor had the desire to. As a crocheter who is now also a knitter, I feel that each of those have their place so to speak. Some things can be made using either, baby clothes, sweaters even but a blanket, crochet; a doily, crochet; socks, knit. I have knitted a doily but that’s another story. I have scads of knitted socks. Most of which I have made. I have a couple of pairs from others.

I am going to try to crochet socks now. Why? I watched a video recently in the tech editor community that I am part of and it was all about crocheted socks. She shared the reasons people think socks can’t be crocheted and they are all reasons I had heard and understood from experience even, but she said it just isn’t true. I bought one of her patterns from Ravelry, this one, and I will be starting it soon.
So come along with me on this journey of crocheted socks. I wear my knitted socks daily and can’t wait to see if crocheted socks are thick and stiff like I’ve always thought. How can a crocheted sock possibly do what it needs too, go over the heel, and not lose shape? Share what you think in the comments and if you’re going on the journey too!
Happy making!
