Crocheted Socks Try #1

I shared a while back that I was going to try crocheted socks and which pattern I’m using. I chose some scraps of sock yarn that I have and got to work.

An unruly skein of bright green yarn sits on a table with a gold crochet hook sticking out of it. Next to it are four smaller balls of yarn; purple, pink, orange and blue.

The first attempt didn’t fit very well.

A partial sock is on a foot. The toe of the sock is blue and the little bit of foot of the sock is bright green.

It was too snug around my foot. I had chosen the largest size in the pattern and I was getting gauge but it just wasn’t going to work.

A partial sock is being measured using a ruler that has been tattooed on a leg. The sock is three inches wide.

I ripped it all out and started again with a larger crochet hook. It fit well enough that I have completed the directions through the foot. I had to add a few rounds to what was written because I was concerned it wasn’t going to be long enough.

In the meantime my son bought me THIS book for Christmas. I am going to wait until I have completed this first sock, maybe even the pair, before I jump into this book. I don’t want to muddy the learning process and working to complete a crocheted sock will help me to know what questions I need to ask.

A book entitled "step into crochet" is laying on a brown table.

I also learned something new about single crochets worked in continuous rounds, when they are worked in the back loop only, it doesn’t cause the spiral thing to happen. I really have no explanation for it but try it for yourself and let me know what you think.

Have you tried crocheted socks before? If so how did it go? Did you like it?

Happy Making!
