Moss Stitch

Moss stitch is a simple textured stitch that occurs in both knit and crochet. In knit it is sometimes confused with the seed stitch and in crochet it is the same thing as the linen stitch.

I am going to share about moss stitch in both crafts in this post. There will samples for you to work, as well as tutorials to get tips and tricks from.

I enjoy working the moss stitch in both crafts. I have a pattern available in each craft using moss stitch. A crocheted shawl and a knit kid’s sweater. Ravelry links below.

I also have a pattern for a kid’s sweater that is currently available but is getting a refresh and will be re-released on March 4, 2025. Sign up HERE for my newsletter so that you don’t miss that.

Crochet Moss Stitch

This stitch is simple to work, flat or in the round. When worked flat, depending on the set up, it can be a one or two row repeat. I have an example of each in the pdf I am sharing below. This pdf contains the written and charted directions for both right and left hand crocheters; for working flat and in the round. When working in the round, it is a one round repeat, but is it turned or not? Try both ways and note what kinds of applications you can make for each of the different fabrics.

The moss stitch uses single crochets and ch-1 spaces to create an airy and somewhat stretchy fabric. When worked at a looser gauge the amount of drape goes up and it has a lacy effect.

Knit Moss Stitch

Moss stitch can be worked easily flat or in the round. When worked flat it is a four row repeat, when worked in the round it is still a four round repeat, but Rounds One and Two are the same as are Rounds Three and Four. Slightly different than Rows One and Four; and Rows Two and Three being the same. I have a sample of each in the pdf I am sharing below. The piece for working in the round is small and worked using your desired small circumference knitting technique.

The moss stitch uses both knit and purl stitches to easily give your finished piece some texture. It works best when worked with an average or tighter tension. When worked with a loose tension the texture is lost. However if the textured look isn’t what you’re going for and you want an airy fabric that isn’t garter or stockinette, this one will do nicely. Seed stitch would be better, but that’s for another time.
